New MediaTek Kompanio chipsets to power Chromebooks
Fast, reliable computing
MediaTek is upgrading the Chromebook experience with the announcement of the new Kompanio 520 and 528 chipsets.
These chipsets both integrate two premium Arm Cortex-A76 CPU cores within an octa-core CPU to allow for a more seamless and efficient computing experience on top of accelerated AI enhancements for applications.
The dual-core graphics engine has likewise been upgraded. The 520 will have up to 2GHz of power, while the 528 will be capable of up to 2.2GHz. Aside from that, there will be more optimized battery use to provide all-day life in between charges.
Such chipsets will likely lead to makers building Chromebooks with large 32MP cameras, as they can support 60fps Full HD video recording and ultra-low power audio microphone processing.
Speaking of display resolutions, the powerful chipsets can support a Full HD+ (2520 x 1080) display while users can add an extra Full HD (1920 x 1080) external display – both at 60fps – to get things done even better.
Other key features include:
- Arm Mali G52 MC2 2EE
- LPDDR4x memory (max. frequency: 3,733Mbps)
- eMMC 5.1 storage with hardware command queue
- Hi-Fi 5 DSP
Chromebooks powered by the Kompanio 520 and 528 are expected to be available in the market by early 2023.
