The PHANTOM V Flip2 is TECNO’s freshest flip

Still one of the cheapest at just US$ 699!

Aside from the latest PHANTOM V Fold2, the Shenzhen-based phone maker has also announced the refreshed PHANTOM V Flip2.

Good Inside

Starting with its internals, the PHANTOM V Flip2 is equipped with MediaTek’s Dimensity 8020 6nm chipset with a lone 8GB memory plus 256GB storage configuration. That RAM can be further extended to another 8GB courtesy of MemFusion.

Its 6.9-inch foldable LTPO AMOLED display stays the same with a 22:9 aspect ratio, Full HD+ resolution (2640 x 1080), and an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate.

This also means 100% support to DCI-P3 wide color gamut as well as 2160Hz PWM dimming for reduced eye strain.

Their partnership with Dolby continues by bringing the Dolby Atmos-powered dual stereo speaker setup in this flip form as well.

It also has a dual 5G SIM support and dual standby, as well as GNSS Intelligent Positioning system for better reception even in low-signal areas.

Better Outside

The most obvious change in the PHANTOM V Flip2 is its cover screen. The iconic circular cover display is gone in favor of a bigger and more usable one.

Dubbed as the “Thru Pool” Cover Screen, it’s now a 3.64-inch AMOLED display with a pixel density of 413ppi. This is very similar to the cover screen of motorola’s razr 50 and razr 40 Ultra (last year).

Its cameras were also upgraded to a dual 50MP camera system. The main camera has a bigger 1/1.57-inch sensor (opposed to last year’s 1/1.73-inches). Meanwhile, its ultra-wide lens has a 114-degree FoV (Field of View).

It can shoot macro photos between 5 to 10cm in distance. More so, it supports 2x lossless zoom even without a dedicated telephoto unit. On the inside, its 32MP selfie shooter has AF (Auto Focus).

Greater Usability

With that large cover screen, the TECNO PHANTOM V Flip2 is expected to have better customization and an overall greater usability. There’s support for full-screen keyboard, multitasking, as well as quick operation methods without opening the flip.

For camera shooting, its FreeCam system allows you to shoot photos when the flip is half-folded such as portraits, time-lapses, and even long-exposures. There’s Cover Screen preview for dual screen preview, Ultra Selfie when you want to shoot with the rear cameras, and even a Retro DV mode to mimic old-school videos when you shoot with the flip in the traditional “camcorder” method.

As expected, built-in AI features are also found in the PHANTOM V Flip2. Whether that be the Personal Assistant, Summary, Translation, Magic AI Eraser, AI Pattern, Intelligent Cut-Outs, and more. Even its notable AI camera feats such as Universal Tone Technology and AIGC Portrait are all included.

Extreme Reliability

The TECNO PHANTOM V Flip2 doesn’t aim for being the thinnest. Its thickest point when unfolded is at 7.64mm (16mm folded) — much like Xiaomi’s first flip offering. 196 grams isn’t too light, neither too heavy.

Just like the brand’s new fold, the V Flip2 relies on its upgraded Double Helix Star Track Water Droplet Hinge based on an aerospace-grade super strength steel.

This new hinge system allows for a smoother screen and freer folding angles between 30 to 150 degrees.

It’s also expected to last of up to 400,000 folds at room temperature. Shorter than that if you expose it to high (150,000 folds) and low temperature (100,000 folds).

Its diamond-like finish was made using flash sand etching technique which also makes it resistant to sweat and fingerprints. Furthermore, it’s protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass.

The Flip Leap

Much like its V Fold2 cousin, the V Flip2 boasts a huge leap in battery capacity.

From last year’s 4000mAh, it’s been boosted by 720mAh more. This makes its 4720mAh tank the third biggest so far after the HONOR Magic V Flip (4800mAh) and Xiaomi Mix Flip (4780mAh).

On the contrary, it breaks the record for any flip with the fastest charging capabilities — 70W wired charging to be very precise. TECNO promises a 50% charge in 15 minutes. Full charge is expected to finish in just 45 minutes.

The two flips aforementioned cap at 66W and 67W respectively. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is even miles behind at 25W.

Pricing and Availability

TECNO’s PHANTOM V Flip2 comes in either a subdued Moondust Grey hue or a fresher Travertine Green colorway.

The all-new clamshell-style foldable is expected to retail at around US$ 699 (EUR 633 / GBP 534 / SG$ 910 / PhP 39,600 / INR 58,700). Pricing will vary depending on one’s region.

Again, just like the brand’s book-style foldable, TECNO will sell it first in Africa on September 23. Launch date will soon follow in Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and more on the list.

Apple reportedly gives up on the Vision Pro

But Apple will continue to sell the current model.

Published

When they unveiled the Vision Pro in 2023, Apple touted the wearable as the next big thing after the iPhone. Now, almost three years removed from the launch, the Vision Pro hasn’t really taken over the coveted spot occupied by the iPhone. Apple, according to a report, is allegedly canning the short-lived wearable.

According to MacRumors, Apple has reportedly given up on making the Vision Pro a thing. The team handling the wearable has supposedly been subsumed by other teams within Apple.

If true, the wearable’s end is unfortunate but not surprising. Despite being out for years, the Vision Pro has sold only a little more than half a million units with numerous returns from customers. Most recently, Apple updated the wearable with the M5 chip, but the move hasn’t revitalized the device’s status in Apple’s lineup.

Most of the complaints about the device stem from its exorbitant price or its cumbersome battery pack. Besides costing a whopping US$ 3,499, the Vision Pro is also difficult to move around with, especially because of its total weight and a battery pack that can get in the way.

To be clear, Apple has not officially discontinued the Vision Pro yet. The company continues to sell the version with the M5 chip. Apple can also restart development in the future.

However, the meantime retirement on future development does coincide with the recent restructuring inside the company. Tim Cook recently decided to step down as CEO with John Ternus as his replacement. Canning the Vision Pro might be Ternus’ first step in redefining Apple according to his plans.

YouTube makes picture-in-picture mode free for everyone globally

The update is rolling out globally now.

Published

on

Picture-in-picture (or PiP) mode is a godsend for multitaskers. The feature lets users watch videos in a tiny floating window while doing other tasks. However, the feature isn’t readily available for all users. Or wasn’t, at least. YouTube is now rolling out PiP mode for free globally.

Previously, PiP mode was exclusive to YouTube users who pay for Premium or Premium Lite. It was also exclusive to the United States.

Now, YouTube is making the feature completely free for users all over the globe. It will be available for both iOS and Android versions of the app.

There’s still a catch, though. The free version is available only for “longform, non-music content.” The same goes for Premium Lite subscribers. Music is still an exclusive feature for those who pay for the regular version of Premium. Basically, there is no change for paying users or users in the United States.

Using PiP mode is simple. All you need to do is load up a video you want to watch in the background. Then, just exit the YouTube app and go about your other tasks. The video will be inside a floating, resizable window while you look at other things.

There’s no timeline on when the update will reach your device. However, YouTube has promised that it will roll out globally within the coming months.

OnePlus has reportedly merged with realme

Both brands were previously rumored for restructuring early this year.

OnePlus 13

OnePlus has a problem. For a while now, rumors have swirled about the company’s dissolution. For their part, the company has continued to deny the reports, citing business as usual. Likely to their dismay, the reports just keep coming. Today, sources have hinted that OnePlus has merged with realme.

Back in January, it was rumored that OnePlus would be closing up shop this year. Since the company very quickly denied the rumors, the report hardly made waves. However, a suspected merger with realme is more difficult to debunk.

For one, realme is itself in a very interesting position. Also back in January, realme was reportedly moving back into being a sub-brand of OPPO. Coupled together with the OnePlus debacle, all this internal restructuring seems par for the course.

According to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, OnePlus and realme have already concluded the merger. The two brands have reportedly united their Chinese and international operations under one roof. Likewise, their marketing will be the same. Pete Lau will still be the main head for this new division.

As with anything of this nature, take this with a grain of salt. OPPO, OnePlus, and realme have not issued any official statements concerning a merger or a shutdown for any brand.
