Chrome OS Flex is meant for old PCs and MacBooks
Besides Apple’s macOS, desktop and notebook users have a limited number of options for operating systems outside of Windows and Linux. Well, if you have a certain type of device, you might have one more option. Google is launching an installable version of Chrome OS for PCs and Macs.
Called Chrome OS Flex, the new operating system will come to older devices, whether it’s a PC or a Mac. The system can also be installed within minutes of plugging in a USB with the software.
According to what Google has for the system so far, the new operating system will focus on speed. Besides installation, booting up devices should be fast, too. Additionally, devices with the update will not slow down over time. It’s a significant promise especially for older devices with dated hardware.
The system also boasts zero need for antivirus software. It already blocks executables automatically.
Currently, Chrome OS Flex is only on early access. Also, the software is built more for enterprise and school users. Though it’s available for any user, some functionalities might apply more for those users, rather than casual ones.
Regardless, the operating system is a good alternative for refreshing old devices. Plus, it’s a legitimate way to finally install Chrome OS without buying a Chromebook for it. Of note, you can still get a non-Flex version of Chrome OS — Chromium OS — for devices.
