We already know that the Vivo X21’s headline feature is the in-display fingerprint scanner. What most people don’t realize right away is that the phone is also home to plenty of AI features.
The AI features are found primarily in three areas: photos, smart engine, and gaming.
AI Photos
First up is the front-facing camera. Face Access has been around for a few Vivo phones now but with AI, it’s smarter and faster.
Vivo has always taken pride in its selfies, and is now taking it to another level with AI Face Beauty and AI Face Lighting.
AI Face Beauty scans the user’s face to determine the most appropriate effects to have him or her looking fine, while AI Face Lighting applies light effects depending on what setting you choose. The options include: Studio Light, Stereo Light, and Monochrome Background.
The dual rear cameras are assisted by AI HDR Photos and AI Scene detection. There’s a lot that goes on in here, which will probably merit another article, but for now let’s do a quick overview.
The two aforementioned AI features work in tandem to produce the best-possible photos taken no matter what lighting condition. Just take a look at these lovely photos taken in Sydney, Australia.

- Sydney’s really pretty at night
AI Smart Engine
Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIE), the Vivo X21 learns your habits as a user. The more you use the phone, the faster it learns your tendencies. And when it does, the sooner it adjusts to more efficient processor utilization based on your usage.
An efficient processor means longer battery life too, because it learns to shut down apps that may be running in the background even when not in use. Pretty neat!
AI Game Mode
This one’s for the mobile gamer. Nobody likes getting interrupted when they play. That used to be a tough request when your gaming device also happens to be your phone and a notification machine.
AI Game Mode knows when you’re playing so notifications are kept at bay. If you’re a klutz like this writer, you don’t have to worry about accidentally jumping out of the game app since the AI makes sure that doesn’t happen, leaving you to focus on winning.
