ESRB has a new label for games with loot boxes

Every gamer out there must have encountered the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) label in one way or another. Game trailers always display the label, and it is also found on every packaging. The label acts as a friendly guide to what everyone can expect in a game that they just purchased. Plus, it limits a certain game to certain demographics.

Today, ESRB has introduced a new label for games with loot boxes. Well, it is not exactly a new label, since it is a small addition to a change done by the regulatory board last 2018. This small addition adds the disclaimer “Includes Random Items”  after the In-Game Purchases notice below the label. Still, this addition is a big one that the board treats as a new label for games.

Anyone who encounters this label shall know that the game they’re about to play contains loot boxes. Loot boxes are a thing now in most games these days. These are items that encourage a player to purchase it in return for a reward. What differentiates this from normal in-game purchases is the element of mystery. A player who purchased a loot box doesn’t know what will be the reward thereafter. The rewards are simply randomized.

The move by ESRB comes at a time when loot boxes are being criticized for luring certain demographics and encouraging unwanted purchases. Game developers like EA were criticized for relying on loot boxes to boost purchases on some games such as Star Wars Battlefront 2. With the new labels, every gamer can now easily spot which games are bundling loot boxes to a great effect.

Animal Crossing is launching a ColourPop makeup collection

Despite a full slate of exciting games last year, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was one of the most influential games of 2020. The island life simulator allowed everyone stuck at home to connect with another despite the pandemic. However, even with the gameplay, the game is just so darn cute. If you wholeheartedly agree (and why wouldn’t you?), Nintendo is collaborating with ColourPop for an Animal Crossing-themed makeup collection.

In its announcement post on Twitter, Nintendo unveiled four color palettes in the collection. The forefront of the collection features Isabelle’s yellow complexion and her cute-as-a-button pink top. If you’re looking for something more inspired, Blathers and Celeste have their own color palette featuring combination of their colors. For the stylish, the Able Sisters shine in purple and lilac. If, however, you’re looking for capitalist chic, Tom Nook has his own palette featuring his cash-money green.

The Animal Crossing x ColourPop collection will launch on January 28. Though only four palettes were showcased, the collection might include further characters. Besides the main characters around your island, the game also has a wide variety of cute potential villagers.

PeSO announces partnership with Mineski Philippines

Now comes with more opportunites for the youth in Esports

The Philippines continues to build on a promising future for Esports and Mineski is leading the charge. In their eyes, the youth will carry the torch for many years to come. Now, with their latest partnership, the future will be within reach for the young ones.

One of the Philippines’ premier Esports organizations formalized their partnership with the Pilipinas ESports Organization (PeSO). Specifically, the partnership centers around Mineski’s Youth Esports Program as one of PeSO’s flagship activities. The YEP, in itself, already brings together a network of over 200 schools all over the country.

In essence, PeSO looks to promote the YEP as a training ground for future Esports superstars. Furthermore, they’re also looking to endorse the program to other schools in the country, and even to the International Esports Federation. In return, Mineski will assist PeSO member organizations to promote their future events and activities. As such, the two organizations hope to cultivate and motivate the youth to explore opportunities in Esports.
