Lenovo Yoga 9i, Yoga Slim 9i: As premium as it gets

For the elevated notebook experience

Published

on

There are notebooks that are just enough to get you by your daily work and play life. These will serve you well for a good number of years. The Lenovo Yoga 9i and Yoga Slim 9i are NOT one of those notebooks. Why? Because they will more than get you by. These are the notebooks that you show off and that show you off.

You see, they represent the best of what the Lenovo Yoga line has to offer. That’s why Lenovo is launching them in time for the holidays. When you finally decide to upgrade from the laptop you’ve been using for years that’s been begging to be replaced, Lenovo wants to make sure you’re looking at these.

Lenovo Yoga 9i

The Yoga 9i comes in both 14-inch and 15-inch variants. Whichever you choose, you’re getting some of the best internals available. Both offer the super-fast responsiveness of next-gen Intel Core processors (coming soon) combined with graphics based on the Intel Xe architecture.

The larger 15-inch option comes with the performance of up to 10th Gen Intel Core i9 HK-Series mobile processor and enhanced by the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti with Max-Q Design.

The 15-inch Yoga 9i comes with up to 16GB DDR4 memory and up to 2TB PCIe SSD storage. You’re also getting discrete graphics and two Thunderbolt 3 ports for power, speedy data transfers and external display support.

Both come with Windows Ink and a garaged active pen that fits comfortably in your hand and quickly recharges inside the PC when not in use. If you’re a scribbler who prefers a real pen in your hand, the new elastomer nib on the Yoga 9i’s digital pen replicates a nicer, smoother tactile feel when writing.

But since this is the Yoga line we’re talking about, it’s not all about the interior. They took special care to make sure it looks premium too.

The Yoga 9i will be available in a “responsibly sourced” authentic black leather cover bonded with an aerospace-grade, aluminum chassis for more durability.

Lenovo says the leather went to a 20-step bonding process to ensure that it’s made with an incredible eye for details and craftsmanship. This just means that the leather is tough and will age beautifully as premium leather items are known to do.

The Yoga 9i convertible is also offered in all-metal and multiple colors, including warm Mica on the 14-inch and Slate Grey on the 15-inch model.

Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i

If you wanna go a little extra slim there’s the 14-inch Yoga Slim 9i. It’s one of the thinnest and lightest laptops at just 13.9mm (0.54 inches) and weighing only 1.26kg (2.77 lbs).

It offers up to 4K touchscreen IPS VESA DisplayHDR 400 (3840 x 2160) with up to 90 percent DCI-P3 color spectrum and 500 nits of brightness that’s optimized by Dolby Vision.

That display is complemented by the Dolby Atmos Speaker System which is delivered through dual front-facing speakers on the Yoga Slim 9i laptop.

Featured for the first time on the Yoga Slim 9i is a new privacy advancement aimed at maintaining a slimmer top bezel while still shutting out unwanted onlookers.

Simply flick an electrical shutter switch on the side to cut power to the Yoga Slim 9i’s built-in infrared (IR) camera for peace of mind.

More smart features

Taking the pandemic and handwashing measures into account, these new Lenovo Yogas have a more accurate login of the new Ultrasonic Fingerprint Reader8 that’s liquid resistant and works even with damp or freshly sanitized fingers.

The improved Yoga laptop keyboards now come with soft-landing dome-design keypads to enable a smooth, comfortable and responsive typing experience that feels bouncier.

The Yoga Slim 9i also comes with a Smart Sense Keyboard that auto-adjusts your keyboard’s white backlighting based on ambient light conditions.

Battery life

Despite being light and thin, don’t think for a second that Lenovo didn’t think about extended working periods on these devices.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i and Yoga Slim 9i are power efficient.

The dual charging built into the Yoga Slim 9i along with an increased battery capacity — from 52WHr to 63.5WHr — contributes to a battery life of up to 20 hours.

The 14-inch Yoga 9i is expected to last up to 18 hours while the 15-inch Yoga 9i convertible can get up to 13 total hours of battery life.

Pricing and availability

  • Yoga 9i (14-inch) will start at $1399 (metal), $1699 (leather) expected to be available October 2020.
  • Yoga 9i (15-inch) will start at $1799 expected to be available October 2020.

There’s been much ado about the NVIDIA RTX Spark. By now, you’ve probably heard a lot about the upcoming reinvention of PCs. But, as a regular consumer, it’s hard to visualize just how this revolution looks like. Thankfully, in NVIDIA’s demo suites, a few manufacturers got to showcase their take on an RTX Spark notebook. And all of them are coming out in the fall.

Unfortunately, none of these brands could share comprehensive details about their laptops beyond a promise for raw power. All of these models aren’t the final version yet.

However, just from what we can tell, these notebooks do feel different from the standard fare of laptops today. For one, they are deceptively heavier. Though all of the OEMs promise a much thinner profile, they’re either packing a lot of tech inside or are using denser materials for their chassis. But again, these are engineering units, so who knows how heavy these things will actually be?

Secondly, based on NVIDIA’s demos, they can do a lot of heavy lifting. NVIDIA says that these superchips are meant for developers and creators, but gamers will also find joy in their performance. DLSS 4.5, in particular, feels like a true revolution in terms of graphics.

Thankfully, fall isn’t too far away. If you can wait, the next evolution of PCs is just around the corner.
