Apple abandons Bing for Google Search on Siri and Spotlight
In a surprising yet not-that-surprising move, Apple has opted to make Google the default search engine for Siri’s results on iPhones and for Spotlight on Mac computers.
The update has already begun rolling out, according to Tech Crunch. The decision was made in order to align Siri and Spotlight’s search results with the Google Search-powered results of the Safari browsers of both the iPhone and Mac.
Apple told Tech Crunch, “Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS, and Spotlight on Mac will allow these services to have a consistent web search experience with the default in Safari.”
Interestingly, web image results will still come from Bing. And naturally, YouTube will continue to provide results for video searches.
Apple users should feel the difference; Google is, after all, the preferred search engine of more than 80 percent of all users, according to recent surveys.
How much money or pride tugging was involved in this deal is uncertain, but as long as we have more Google and less Bing, we shouldn’t complain.
