Qualcomm shuts down its satellite connectivity technology
Snapdragon Satellite is dead
Satellite connectivity is one of the most promising advancements in recent history. Unfortunately, the technology has seemingly arrived way too early for its own good. Though the feature is still active on iOS, Qualcomm is canning its own version of the technology.
At the start of the year, Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon Satellite during CES 2023. Snapdragon Satellite works in the same way as Apple’s version. The feature allows users to communicate with others without a SIM card or network coverage. It uses satellites to send messages, making it especially essential for outdoor hiking trips.
Despite Qualcomm’s reveal, the company needs manufacturers to buy into the technology. Months later, no one is sold. Iridium, Qualcomm’s satellite partner, has confirmed that no one bought Snapdragon Satellite. As a result, the company is dissolving its partnership with Qualcomm, effective December 3.
Because a finalized version never made it to market, it’s impossible to say why manufacturers refused Qualcomm’s offer. Either the manufacturers didn’t see the value of adding the feature or the technology has some hidden fees behind the scenes.
That’s not to say that the technology is dead on arrival, though. Other companies — such as MediaTek, Motorola, and Samsung — are creating or have created their version of the technology.
Apple is still offering its own satellites, too. However, Apple’s version is still limited to emergency situations wherein users need immediate help in a non-covered area.
