HUAWEI debuts the Pura 80 Ultra with “switchable” telephoto lenses

Announced alongside three other Pura 80 models

Published

on

Just two days after the software-studded WWDC 25 event by Apple, HUAWEI tries to steal the spotlight and reveals the Pura 80 Ultra — at least in China.

They clearly won’t miss this chance of joining the “Ultra” gang as all major key players are already out: the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, OPPO Find X8 Ultra, and vivo X200 Ultra.

Ultra in sight, and in mind

It seems like HUAWEI is sticking with its “Forward Symbol” camera design this year. However, it’s even bigger than ever — and it’s not purely for aesthetics.

Last year’s “Ultra” highlight was the retractable 1-inch main camera with a variable aperture.

That’s not to say that it’s absent this year. It still has one, just without that pop-up mechanism.

But, the highlight this time, is all about that “switchable” telephoto lens system with just a single image sensor beneath. Proving a further breakthrough in engineering.

The HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra is capable of giving the best of both worlds: 3.7x and 9.4x optically-zoomed shots. It’s definitely an upgrade from the loner 3.5x telephoto lens of previous iterations.

Additionally, shots beyond 30x will still be achievable in utmost clarity with HUAWEI’s camer-AI magic.

Although the brand has departed from their long-time Leica partnership since the P50 series, HUAWEI’s excellent imaging capabilities still remain.

All thanks to HUAWEI’s XMAGE imaging tech alongside the Red Maple spectral camera first introduced on the Mate 70 series, it can keep up with brands and their camera collabs.

Plentiful Pura 80

If the Pura 80 Ultra isn’t your cup of tea, there are still the other three flavors on the table: the Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, and Pura 80 Pro+.

Despite their superlatives, this year’s Pura 80 series isn’t as confusing as it seems.

But, for clarifications, here’s a rundown of their camera nuances:

Chipset still remains a mystery but, these Pura 80 phones pack the great goodies: 16GB memory for the Ultra and Pro+ variants while 12GB for the Pro and base models.

Higher 512GB/1TB storage options are exclusive (again) to the higher-end line, while a 256GB option is available for both the vanilla and Pro variants.

5700mAh battery is equipped in all three phones with support for 100W SuperCharge / 80W Wireless SuperCharge speeds.

Aside from that, watered-down specs are found on the vanilla Pura 80: 5600mAh battery, slower 66W wired + 50W wireless charging, and a smaller 6.6-inch flat OLED display.

Speaking of, the three higher-ups all feature a slightly larger 6.8-inch quad-curved OLED display. However, all displays have adaptive 1~120Hz refresh rate, 2160Hz PWM Dimming, and support for DCI-P3 Wide Color Gamut, plus 1.07 Billion Colors.

Also, all models feature HUAWEI’s second-gen Kunlun glass. Albeit, the top-tier Ultra and Pro+ models are Xuanwu or basalt-tempered for an even better scratch-resistance.

The only great denominator among all models is the dual IP68+IP69 rating.

As expected, all phones run the latest HarmonyOS NEXT 5.1 with all the magical, modern-day AI features in mind.

Apple: 2025 a record-breaking year for App Store, services

Record-breaking engagement, milestones, continuous innovations

Published

on

Apple services had a record-breaking 2025, marked by global expansion and new engagement milestones.

From Apple TV, Apple Music, and Apple News, to Apple Pay and iCloud, enriching experiences in 2025 saw incredible engagement, especially during the holiday season.

It naturally helped that Apple rolled out game-changing features and innovations for customers across all their major apps and services.

Particularly, the App Store saw unprecedented engagement, averaging over 850 million weekly users across 175 countries and regions.

Developers have earned more than US$ 550 billion since 2008. In 2024 alone, the App Store ecosystem facilitated US$ 1.3 trillion in developer billings and sales. More than 90 percent of that commerce go directly to developers.

Engagement rose between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, with visitors spending on digital goods and services over this period at a record-breaking number.

Milestones across Apple services

Across the board, services also celebrated new milestones.

Apple Pay generated more than US$ 100 billion in incremental merchant sales globally. It also eliminated over US$ 1 billion in fraud. The digital wallet is now available in 89 markets.

Apple Wallet also leveraged Apple Intelligence to make it easier for users to keep track of their orders. Apple Maps added Preferred Routes and Visited Places and made them easily accessible.

Meanwhile, Apple TV set new monthly engagement records in December with total hours viewed up 36 percent compared to the previous year.

This was fueled by audience growth across Europe and Latin America, as well as continued expansion in the United States.

The streaming debut of F1 also helped significantly as the summer blockbuster was the No. 1 movie at the global box office. It was also the top Apple TV film and the highest-grossing sports movie of all time.

Apple News, which celebrated its 10th year last year as well, solidified its position as the No. 1 news app in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Moreover, Apple Music also reached all-time highs in 2025 in terms of listenership and new subscriptions.

The music streaming platform added AutoMix, Lyrics Translation and Pronunciation, and Enhanced Dialogue as its new features last year.

Apple Arcade, on the other hand, launched over 50 new games last year. Some hits were from the biggest entertainment and sports IPs, like SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2 and PGA TOUR Pro Golf.

Even essentials like Find My and Apple Fitness+ have expanded to more countries, while Apple Maps enriched its Detailed City Experience.

Lastly, Apple made it easier for users to connect with others last year with the release of Apple Invites.

This helps create custom invitations to bring people closer together for any occasion. Users can RSVP from any device, and unlimited event creation is included with in iCloud+ subscription.

Nothing will no longer lock screen ads on the Phone (3a) series

But they will still be there for the Phone (3a) Lite and CMF phones.

Published

on

Nothing is currently an indie darling of the smartphone scene. Besides the brand’s unforgettable designs, every Nothing phone offered a clean Android experience with a refreshingly smooth skin. Late last year, that all changed with a newly introduced feature called Lock Glimpse, which also included unwanted ads on the lock screen. Fans outraged, and now, Nothing is almost completely backtracking on the feature.

At the end of last week, Nothing announced a small update for Nothing OS 4.0. Following feedback from users, the brand is removing Lock Glimpse from the Phone (a) series, except the Lite versions. The announcement does not rule out adding the feature again but only after it’s been made “less intrusive.”

If you’ve touched a midrange phone recently, you might be familiar with how Lock Glimpse works. Essentially, it’s a custom lock screen that includes content suggested by the software such as recommended articles, choice photos, and ads. For those who want a simple interface, you won’t get much peace from such a feature.

As expected, Nothing’s users balked at the feature’s inclusion, especially after the brand’s previous promises to not include ads. According to the initial announcement, Lock Glimpse is supposed to help the brand recoup the cost of producing non-flagship phones and pricing them competitively.

Now, only the Phone (3a) Lite and CMF devices will come with Lock Glimpse. It will still remain off by default. Plus, the brand is working on adding support to uninstall the feature completely in the future.

Besides the Lock Glimpse update, Nothing OS 4.0 will now also support the removal of Meta App Installer, Meta App Manager, and Meta Service. The update initially started pre-installing recommended apps, which users also disliked.
