Xiaomi patents new smartphone designs
Now includes ridiculous placement for dual front cameras
It is, indeed, 2019 as smartphone manufacturers including Samsung, Apple, OPPO, and even Motorola come up with a plethora of foldable smartphone design patents. For Xiaomi, they are still trying to come up with solutions for existing issues such as punch-hole displays and a full edge-to-edge look.
Although this particular patent was thought to be an April Fools’ prank, it’s actually a registered patent from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). To ensure its authenticity, the WIPO document states that the filing of the patents took place on May 25, 2018. They were then registered on March 29, 2019, which is still ahead of April Fools’ Day.
Looking at the rendered patents created by LetsGoDigital, they both reveal that Xiaomi reconsidered the placement of the dual front cameras and put them at the bottom part of the screen: one with a bottom notch, while the other patent shows the cameras placed at both corners of the display.
Although it looks fashionable enough, let’s not forget the fact that placing front cameras at the bottom of the display, just like their very own Mi Mix, Mi Mix 2, and Mi Mix 2S, actually takes unpleasing selfies.
Revealing the back side reveals nothing peculiar since they both look like what Xiaomi and the rest of the phone companies do with their smartphones: either a back with dual curved edges for better ergonomics or just a simple, flat back.
Even though this isn’t officially becoming a real device anytime soon, we hope Xiaomi won’t be too idealistic, especially because of the ridiculous front camera placement, and that they would think of something more practical.
